When Mayhar was asked to lead workshops at the recent Metropolitan Cooking and Entertaining Events in Dallas and Houston, we were thrilled! Our days are spent pouring over beautiful and inspiring images and ideas, and we really wanted to show our audience how an idea or concept can be used as inspiration for design…..design for you home, design for your next event, and, in this particular instance….design for your table decor!
Our mission was to select three very different concept images and use various elements from each image to translate that theme into table design. I, personally, find inspiration in so many different places…..in storefront windows, in colorful and glossy magazine spreads, in an assortment of beautifully colored ombre teabags, and in the beautiful canvas of nature.
While there really are no rules in design, I try to always take into account these helpful principles & tips:
- Multiple layers of various different colors and textures help to add dimension, depth and interest to any space or setting.
- Try to always incorporate something fresh or living. Plants, flowers and even fresh fruit will add great energy and life wherever they are placed.
- Always use what you have and find fun and inexpensive ways to incorporate new ideas and designs through fun DIY projects and easily resourced accent pieces.
- Think outside the box, and don’t be afraid to try new things!

How many times have you seen an outfit you loved and felt inspired? From JCrew to Anthropologie, there are so many colorful and unique outfits that make wonderful sources of inspiration. We selected the above image because of its mixture of colors, textures and prints. With your every day dinnerware, you can add splashes of prints, pops of color and added texture to recreate the outfit as your next dinner party place setting!
The above image is a digital representation of a beautiful art piece by Noelle Palm. Made from mixed media including melted crayons, glitter and wax, Noelle has selected textures and colors that make the perfect color palette for a colorful and feminine bridesmaid brunch. In order to mirror the mixed media of the artwork, we’ve incorporated a shimmery charger and sweet DIY elements.
We loved this gorgeous flower bouquet {courtesy Once Wed} for its organic nature and blend of rich colors. This elegant inspiration was transformed into a holiday dinner party, with magenta and pink hues adding another unexpected layer to the traditional greens and reds of December. Our fine china has been selected to compliment the setting along a bright and colorful punch of floral decor! Add a pomegranate to the gold bowl for a fresh finishing touch!
